So as Blogger can be a "pain" when it comes to amending old pages - because really, you are amending old posts, and they think, "why do you want to do that" because most people use Blogger to rant about the state of the world - this page will be a fun overflow page where any "old" magazines that turn up but can't be easily slotted into the relevant year will be stuck here instead. Slightly random I know, but think of it like when you get a free EP with somebody's new album!

Elle Korea
September 2004

Does what it says on the tin. Another Elle cover from '04, this time from (South) Korea, this photo is from a Elle shoot Sophie did, originally, for the US edition of the magazine the same year. Knocking about is a promo postcard from which this cover image is reproduced, so I will be honest - at the time of writing, I am aware of the existence of the postcard, but have never seen the actual magazine!
The Edit
20th February 2014

I really had no idea where to stick this, so I thought I'd put it here. "The Edit" is an online magazine, and this image was the 'cover' of issue 235, which went online on Feb 20th '14. This link should do the job: http://www.net-a-porter.com/magazine/235/10 but apologies if not. Basically, there is no cover really, but each issue would feature somebody as their star interviewee, and in this particular week, it was Sophie.
Elle Korea
May 2004
Another image of another Korean "Elle", as seen on another postcard being flogged on eBay. Yet again, at the time of writing, another mag the webmaster has never actually seen.
TN2
Issue 205, Fall 2007

Another bit of a mystery one - this is an in house magazine from Ireland, distributed to the students of Trinity College, Dublin. I assume there is a hard copy version of this, but my first awareness of it was by finding this "online" edition: https://issuu.com/trinitynews/docs/tn2-20vol-2054-20issue-205. So, if anybody can shed any more light as to whether this is just another "The Edit" or not, please get in touch. Anyway, it was issued when Sophie's "Grown Ups" was out, and she was in Ireland to promote the book - this is an exclusive interview.jason45104@fsmail.nethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05683296107554303385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2519105491672042015.post-68632162935526192762012-03-29T11:24:00.000-07:002020-02-01T02:23:59.514-08:002012 and beyond

It is a given, that as soon as a female celebrity gets past a certain age, the magazine editors are not so keen to put said celeb on their front covers. Also factor in the likelihood that said celeb will have been superseded by the latest new kids on the block, and the chances of them getting on the same magazines that they used to ten plus years before are increasingly unlikely.

2012 marks, more or less, the 15th anniversary of the start of Sophie's modelling career, making her part of the Supermodel Elite, a pin up girl from an earlier generation, and it is no surprise to see that by this point, with Sophie having hit the grand old age of, erm, 35, that she would invariably find herself being passed over for covers for the young whippersnappers. Also take into account the fact that she had, technically, retired from modelling in 2011-ish, and then factor in she was never quite as famous as Kate or Naomi in the first place, and you can see why Sophie's cover appearances seem to have dipped in recent years, although the cookery stuff did see a quick burst of action back in 2010.

So, partly due to the fact that Blogger is a pain when it comes to uploading pictures in the right place when compared to other pages in the same site (margins, paragraph breaks, etc.), and partly because Sophie was now part of the old-skool, struggling to get on the cover of "Vogue" anymore, this page is thus home to Sophie's covers post-2012, rather than being used for just a single year. The concept is basically the same as for the previous 15 years worth of images, it just looks a bit different! So let's carry on with...

Aubin & Wills Autumn Almanac
Summer 2012

OK, again, not a magazine per se, but when this site first launched, the "Gallery" pages did not exist, and this part of the site was the only place to show catalogues. So here's another one, which saw Sophie return to her roots, back at the top of the Supermodel Podium. Issued to coincide with Sophie's shoot for the company in late summer 2012, this nifty little freebie includes - count 'em - 21 photos, and an exclusive interview. Sophie did another fashion shoot in 2013, this time for Brora, and although that campaign too spawned a mini catalogue, it was less "weighty" than this one. The cover of that one can be found on the "Gallery 4" page in the "Sophie-ography" on the main site.
The Hill
September 2012

No barcode, so this one is a freebie, issue 335 of what was described on eBay as a "property magazine" by the person I bought it from. Yes, there are lots of adverts for houses that nobody can afford inside, but the front half of this London-only magazine is a mish mash of Esquire-esque randomness, with sections on food, homes, and of course, fashion - which is where Mrs Cullum comes in. Cover and photo-article from the Aubin & Wills shoot.
Country & Town House
June 2013

I'll admit, I'd never heard of this one 'til Sophie made the cover. Thick glossy thing, rather obscure, not the sort of thing you'd get in every shop. A kind of "Country Life" style mag. The front cover is a 'Brora' image, and, as often happens, the main article despite featuring some Sophie imagery, is mostly based around an interview with one of the head honchos at the company, rather than Soph. Original copies are shrinkwrapped, with a "Great British Hotels" supplement, bigger than the magazine itself, and a couple of inserts for "Art Antiques London" and "The Auction Room". My copy has a 'security protected' sticker on the front, but not sure if this is unique to the store I bought it in (WH Smith) or not.
Red
March 2014

Seemingly issued to plug Sophie's revamped website, and not much else, this is nevertheless a rather swish looking cover, with some nifty new shots inside. Detail about the interview was, unusually, published some days beforehand - unlike most of the other covers on this site, which usually just appeared when nobody was looking - and covered the usual subjects...the mad childhood, the husband, modelling and food. Nice stuff.

Red [Subscription Edition]
March 2014

And here's the subscribers edition. It is worth pointing out that, apart from some minor front cover alterations, the retail edition was also available in "handbag" form, of which some - maybe all - suffered from a printing fault, where some of the pages concerning a travel feature were printed upside down! There was also another one of those "3 in 1" editions, where the barcode was removed and instead in it's place appeared a 'not for re-sale' legend, of which there were two variants - one which included "Red" as the main mag plus two freebies, and another 'led' by a copy of "Good Housekeeping" with Sophie's "Red" cover officially one of the freebies, as it was tucked in the middle of the packaging. Both editions of the actual mag are identical. It is also worth pointing out that some, maybe all, of Sophie's "Red" covers over the years have been exported overseas, where the UK barcode would have pasted over it a barcode relevant to that country, complete with alternate price tag.
Style
18th May 2014

AKA "Sunday Times Style". In this issue, they announced the winners of their '2014 Beauty Awards' and Sophie was their - in their words - poster girl for the awards. A bit tenuous if you ask me. Anyway, if you thought the "Red" shoot was a bit mumsy, this one is a bit more vampy, with four other brand new photos inside. Mini interview, and the link to the awards is that for each photo, details of the make up used is listed. The inside photos were also published on the Sunday Times website, but only available if you were a subscriber.

Boodles Catalogue
2015

Issued at the tail end of '14, this is another "non magazine" but I thought I'd stick it here. Basically, a catalogue advertising the (expensive) Boodles range, with - at random points inbetween - double page spreads of Sophie, including a few pictures I had never seen before. For those of you who don't know, this ad campaign had been launched in the UK during the summer of 2014, albeit a bit low key, and is referred to in the Diary Pages. The front cover image was a slightly longer version of the pic you see above, with the "Boodles" legend embossed in gold at the bottom of the catalogue, whilst the cover itself is really just a dust cover, like you'd get with a hardback book, so can removed if you so wish. Why would you do that with this glamourpuss on the front though?

Boodles Catalogue
2016

And here's the follow up, issued early 2016, featuring photos from the second wave of Boodles shots done in 2015. No dust cover this time around, and unlike the 2015 one, Sophie images are reserved for a short 'feature' towards the end, with three photos being used as the conclusion to the catalogue.

Boodles Catalogue
2017

In the summer of 2016, Boodles launched the "Sophie Collection". By the end of the year, they had published this catalogue, which made reference to said collection. As per the 2016 one, no dust cover - at least, my copy hasn't got one - and there are a selection of 'new' Sophie images inside once more. Photos from this catalogue made some brief appearances in some of the glossy fashion mags, and the likes of "Country And Town House", during the first half of 2017.

Ostensibly a plug for "From Season To Season", with a mention of the Mrs Beeton TV show, this magazine was published in the first week of October '11, and thus surfaced after both the book was out and the TV show had been broadcast!

Four new photos inside, exclusive shot on the cover, plus a small "oldie", it came - as was now standard - in both normal and travel size editions. Both versions came shrinkwrapped, with a free "Red Direct" catalogue sealed with each, with the "normal" size one also including a "Wallpaper Direct" catalogue as well.

The interview refers to her modelling career in the past tense, pretty much an official signing off of that part of her career, and references to her apprehensive attitude towards Twitter (good timing, the magazine coming a few weeks after that "shed" incident saw her go offline for two or three weeks - Google it if you don't know what it was all about). A subscriber only edition exists, with a different cover, although the photo on that edition is simply one of the photos inside the magazine. And, given that you had to be subscribed to the magazine before the issue came out, you couldn't just go online the day it was published and subscribe in order to get one, perhaps it's just as well the cover photo is not a rare picture!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDblC3aVPk9GA83hQepSwUxXwRlPvxL5FF2aSR97CzLvLv9mJzuOHCOG39wt5RAhH-b9_IHZSce3mgmSd0OduvvOmj6WV89jWkryfmKAQf4ppFE4NzaLRtr7WJgWjm5rTMj5N2hNvnv3F9/s400/sophie25.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668218222521964386" />
Red [Subscription Edition]
November 2011

Here's the "mail order only" one. It's also worth noting that the retail edition, like Sophie's 2009 "Red" cover, came in different versions, including a shrinkwrapped copy that included a free edition of the then current issue of "Psychologies" magazine. As before, the cover was the same as the normal version, but with no bar code, as these doublepacks were sold at a higher price - hence the barcode would have given the wrong price when scanned at the tills.

jason45104@fsmail.nethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05683296107554303385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2519105491672042015.post-81970845812774156792011-07-04T12:16:00.001-07:002011-07-04T13:32:16.877-07:002010<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm4zjjZ_cjLSOR5IqPU5NFGucrAjbZDEXv4VJ4FHVREYiAb_DmPwivTlGGrqKxiU3RsobpCZZVluw0tFTiKSPGyBVgQFWM0jftfGBFCrKyemw53wMLvQmXgsFIOj4ycn7YdmeLJda1I1e3/s400/zz10a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5625578409848232130" />
Your February Love Stars
2nd February 2010

A freebie supplement inside the "Daily Mirror" newspaper, this is as the title suggests, an astrology supplement. The timing of this newspaper freebie was obviously timed to coincide with the run up to Xmas.

jason45104@fsmail.nethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05683296107554303385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2519105491672042015.post-70356109649468647492011-05-01T07:21:00.000-07:002012-04-14T02:10:42.142-07:002008<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs_VRWNx2EVwjGiy9iJaRDpXtk0jvKAwvUnF4e7FD6YfVo3KrY3_K9UUoqFPsuZXZt7CoFl3agmExNw-3nLoDndLwePemGtCJZDRGzY49XtF9lOS3Iv42XwwrfOZVYdcucTQSdsWKt2NW4/s400/zz08a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601752845178192050" />
Irish Independent Weekend
26th January 2008

Seemingly a delayed magazine cover to vaguely tie in with Sophie's debut novel from the tail end of 2007, this is another newspaper freebie. A recent fad, is the decision to use "alternate" covers for subscriber copies of certain glossy mags. This is the subscriber edition of the same mag, minus all text and barcode.

Not really issued in conjunction with anything like a book or a movie, the original magazine came in a foil cover that didn't actually give much of an indication that Sophie was on the cover at all - "Lost" actress Evangeline Lilly got more attention. The reason for the magazine coming "wrapped up" in the first place was because it included a free (Sophie-less) 2007 calendar. The "Links" page on the Sophie-ography includes a link to the Ryan Michael Kelly site, for other photos from the same session are on his website. The story, called "The Queen's Handbag", revolved around a plot which saw The Queen's bag stolen, and the play followed it's attempts by various celebrities to help find it. Sophie played Sophie, based entirely on the Roald Dahl character from "The BFG", the character originally having been based on Sophie herself in the first place. She, like many of the stars, only got a short section on-stage.
The magazine above exists in various slightly different forms, being a TV listings magazine. The covers were all the same, but in the top right, the UK region the magazine covered was shown, and was obviously different from one region to another. Grattans were a UK based mail order shopping company, who issued these catalogues a couple of times a year to their customers. Inside, you could choose from stereos, clothes, and a wild and wonderful mish mash of everything else. They often managed to get well known models and celebrities to model the clothes and appear on the cover, and this Sophie one was sent out in December 2003. Non customers could then request a copy from their website the following month.

There are seven more Sophie photos inside, and anybody who ordered the catalogue also received an order form in a separate envelope, within which were numerous more inserts. One of the inserts featured a reprint of this cover photo, including an "uncropped version". Unless you ordered something from the company, you were supposed to return the catalogue, but there was nothing stopping you keeping and being unable to return it because you "couldn't remember where I left it..."

If you did order something, your gift included paperwork sent out to confirm your order, complete with images of the catalogues' cover on much of the paraphernalia.

Elle
April 2004

Sophie's first UK mag of 2004. Elle Ukraine
October 2004

OK, so further up this page, I mention that there were three "Elle" variants issued that summer. But as you can see here, there were others issued at other times! This is the Ukranian edition, from later the same year, which is very much based on the UK cover from April. Although it is quite an unusual country from which to see a Sophie cover, it's not the most exciting of the variants, as the amount of Sophie you get inside is rather minimal when compared to the content of the 'original'.
Reports in the press leading up to the release of this magazine suggested that Vogue were going to serialise the book (maybe on a month by month basis), but the interiew in this issue was all that was actually published! A fashion supplement was also given free with this issue, which included a photo of Sophie inside as well. The mag and the supplement came banded together, but finding a copy with all "bits" intact is now nigh on impossible, as most people will have split the two and destroyed the band. In addition to all of this, the magazine also included a Vogue Subscription Postcard insert, complete with the Sophie-starring cover photo from the January 2002 Vogue cover. The scan above is of the newsagents promo poster, displayed in shops at the time of release, the barcode from the original magazine is airbrushed out for the poster shot.

British Vogue
February 2003

Again, a UK pressed magazine designed for export to North America. US prices instead of UK ones on the cover once more. The fashion supplement given free with the UK version is instead incorporated into the main body of the magazine, making this issue thicker than it's UK cousin. The postcard subscription insert does not seem to have been included with this edition, possibly because of it being an export version - certainly, the webmaster's copy has no such insert.

Antiquarian Book Review
February 2003

Not an easy one to find - a bit "specialist", and so only sold in certain shops - but it is a UK mag. Sophie has appeared inside this magazine before, but this - as far as I am aware - was her first time on the cover. A bit of a rarity, I am not sure I have ever seen any copies for sale since I got hold of mine, it seems to be quite difficult to track down if you live outside Holland.

As an aside, now's as good a time as any to make reference to the 26th October 2003 edition of "S2", a large freebie given with The Sunday Express. It features Sophie in a "Top 10 Advertising Babes" feature, thanks to the Opium photo. The cover features a multitude of images related to the article, and the Opium photo makes an appearance. However, a combination of Sophie (of course) not looking at the camera, and other images being slightly larger in size, means I don't think it really counts as a genuine cover, so I have decided against showing it here, but it's a nice thing to own.

jason45104@fsmail.nethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05683296107554303385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2519105491672042015.post-88707336436768315582010-11-03T11:13:00.000-07:002013-04-28T12:19:42.878-07:002002
Vogue
January 2002

An excellent fold out cover with a wealth of UK models on the front (Sophie only appears when you fold it out). An article in Tatler from August 2002 about the history of Cheap Date appeared in the UK just as this issue was out in the USA, complete with some small reprints of Cheap Date covers, including this one. The Tatler article also had some other Sophie photos in the same article, a scan of the main photo is in the "Sophie-ography" pages. As I have forgotten most of the German I learned for my GCSE, I can't completely tell you what the article in this one is about. But it seems to be an article on health and weight, mainly concerned with being overweight - Sophie, at the time, was still just about being talked about as the "Big Supermodel". She is listed on the front as an "XXL" model, which is probably going a bit over the top. Lovely picture, anyway.

This was her first appearance on the cover, and featured a striking photoshoot, and was one of her first big jobs after deamping to New York. The photos were taken by Steven Meisel, who would also do the infamous Opium shoot later the same year. The pictures were quite big, meaning that they had to be spread across two pages, which is a bit of a shame - one photo from the shoot appeared "unblemished" on a single page in the April 2003 edition of "Russian Vogue". Although it had got her noticed, it was being used as a stick to beat her with, and had as many negative connotations as it did positive ones. Sophie shot an exclusive shoot for the UK edition of "Marie Claire" and was due to feature on the cover. The same issue also featured a shoot with actress Pamela Anderson, and the magazine decided to issue two covers - one with Sophie, one with Anderson. Unbeknown to Sophie, the magazine billed each cover as being a battle against the other - they wanted to see which of the two covers would prove to be more popular - the "impossibly pefect" Anderson, or the "realistically curvy" Sophie. Sophie, when she heard what Marie Claire did, threatened them with legal action, as no mention of this had been made when she did the shoot. It was a strange move by Marie Claire, as Sophie had done a US photoshoot with them only a few months previous, but the controversy seems to have blown over, as Sophie articles have appeared in the mag again in recent years.
Pictures from the shoot can be seen here: http://www.sophie-dahl.com/marie-claire.htm

Specchio
26th August 2000

Another Italian mag, this one used one of Sophie's Versace Jeans adverts, but was heavily "zoomed in". Sophie's appearance was to do with an article about "Weight Loss Queens", and showed a 'before' and 'after' set of images. Trouble was, the magazine didn't seem to realise that they got them the wrong way round - the 'before' picture dated from London Fashion Week in late 97, the 'after' was from the "Life" magazine shoot in Spring the same year! Sun Woman
26th February 1997

Sophie's first "cover". It is in fact a newspaper supplement that appeared in the middle of "The Sun" newspaper, and was available for one day only. UK newspaper supplements will sometimes have a cover adorned with nothing more than a tagline, but this one has a Sophie article, the first few paragraphs of which were printed on the front. Some supplements have the cover as "page 1", others will list it as a high number, as if it were part of the main newspaper. The article dealt with Sophie's recent barnstorming debut at London Fashion Week, with another sizzling photo from the catwalk inside, where her appearance as the 'big model' made her stand out from the crowd. The rest, as they say, is history...
Arena
May 1997

The first "proper" cover, and another celebration of Sophie as the leader of the 'over-sized model' brigade. The magazine featured a series of exclusive Sophie shots, most of which have never re-surfaced in any other publications - four in total. The cover shot was used for many years on the front of Sophie's official Storm Models promocard - a black and white reprint of the cover appeared in the middle, with Sophie's Vital Statistics down the right hand side. "Arena" itself is now defunct, a victim of the post-2008 credit crunch. Scans should be featured somewhere in the middle of this discussion forum: http://forums.thefashionspot.com/f52/sophie-dahl-11676-17.html
Life
6th July 1997

A month or so after Sophie appeared in a shoot for this "Observer" newspaper supplement, they couldn't resist getting her back - and this time, put her on the cover. This was an 'A-Z Of The Seaside' special, with Sophie cropping up a couple of times - in the "S is for Saucy" and "U is for Undressing" sections. The photos in this one are beautiful.
13th July 1997

A week later, The Observer put her on the cover again. This time, the magazine was an 'A-Z Of The Countryside' special, and Sophie again appeared a couple of times during the 'countdown'. The main photoshoot is a revelation - Sophie on the tennis court, and a photo of her looking like the sexiest cricketer you will ever see. As was the norm in those days, as a model, she was there more or less to be seen and not heard - so not the faintest whiff of an interview anywhere.
The Express Saturday
19th July 1997

Another UK newspaper freebie, this one is a bit more impressive than the "Sun Woman" cover. It's an actual magazine, rather than a pull out, and was available with the "Daily Express" for one day only. The cover is a bit cluttered - but most "Express Saturday" covers were like this. Again, there are more photos inside. The tagline, "Tales Of The Unexpected", is a reference to her grandfather's TV show of the same name, shown between 1979 and 1988.
Klik
August 1997

A Greek mag, and one of only a handful on this site that the Webmaster still fails to have in his collection, it consists of another exclusive photoshoot. In 2003, the New Life Foundation charity auctioned off Teddy Bear t-shirts that were each signed by a celebrity, complete with a little glossy pic of said celebrity thrown in as well, and one of the "Klik" photos was used on the photo that accompanied the Sophie signed shirt. Scans of these photos shoud be here: http://www.reocities.com/FashionAvenue/1011/imgal1.htm
Hotline
Autumn/Winter 1997

The first ever issue of this freebie magazine, available on trains operated by Virgin Trains during the fall of 1997. Again, a reference to Sophie's size provides the magazine with a headline. "Hotline" is still being published, although it's front cover design has altered since 1997.
Cover
October 1997

Another debut issue, but "Cover" as a publication became defunct many years ago. It was an A3 glossy designed as a "best of" magazine - it specialised in reprinting recent articles from newspapers and magazines, and this issue featured Sophie's interview in "Life" from 8th June 1997, the free magazine given away with "The Observer" newspaper. Photos from the article were also reprinted, and the cover photo you see here formed part of the original article. This is a scan of the webmaster's signed copy of the mag.
ES
19th December 1997

Another freebie, this time with "The Evening Standard", a London evening commuter paper that used to also be available in some surrounding counties. The magazine is big, pretty much the size of the newspaper itself, although for many years now, "ES" has been published in a more "standard" magazine size, whilst The Standard itself is now a free paper. Inside, there was a two page spread of Sophie, complete with exclusive photo, and this copy - again - is a scan of the webmaster's own signed copy. The only downside was that the inside picture was printed right across two pages, meaning Sophie has staples through her middle!
Hello there, and welcome to the Sophie Dahl Covers Pages, part of "Sophie Dahl Rocks".

Contained herein, you will find scans and information about (I believe) every Sophie Dahl cover from around the globe. It is primarily concerned with magazines, but any newspaper supplements, or newspapers themselves, upon which Sophie appeared on the front, are also included where their existence is known.

Any cover which featured Sophie in part, but not as the "main feature" is excluded, except for those 'multi image' covers where she shared the front with one or more other celebs. Details of any such known magazines will instead be listed in the "Sophie-ography" part of the main website. Similarly, any newspapers where Sophie appeared on the front, but not as the "main news story", are also excluded. A fairly comprehensive list of newspapers which have featured Sophie in the UK are also listed in the "Sophie-ography".

Again, this site has been built using Blogger, so it looks a bit odd, but to put it simply, the month shown on the left refers to a particular year's worth of scans. The menu below explains more:

1997 - March 2009
1998 - April 2009
1999 - May 2009
2000 - September 2010
2001 - October 2010
2002 - November 2010
2003- December 2010
2004 - January 2011
2005 - February 2011
2006 - March 2011
2007 - April 2011
2008 - May 2011
2009 - June 2011
2010 - July 2011
2011 - October 2011
2012 and beyond - March 2012
Bonus Magazines! - January 2013

Any new covers that appear, either "new" or previously undiscovered "old" ones, will be added when need be, into the relevant part of the site.

If at any point you wish to return to the main Sophie Dahl Rocks homepage, click on the "February 2009" tab to come back to this screen, and click on the link below:
